Happy International Women’s Day! | VLOG: Reflections on the Women’s March

As you know, it’s International Women’s Day. I filmed a very personal vlog in January as I got to be included in one of the most powerful movements in history: The Women’s March. I was so proud to be walking among strong, underrepresented heroes that came out to march. We marched through the wet streets of Vancouver; no drop of rain could stop us. How lucky and grateful am I to be a woman, a wife, a mother, a human being? I am so grateful to be able to speak my truth, and it is my life’s dream to pursue equality for all. Be forewarned, this reaction is a little emotional, and a little personal. I’m just so proud to be lifted by all of the collective voices across the world…time’s up! Watch the vlog, and leave a comment and let your voice be heard too.

Your blog touched my heart. Please know that when someone mistreats you, ITS NOT YOUR FAULT! Do not blame yourself for the horrible actions of someone else. I would like to start something for equality and Women’s rights. I may be 16, but I still have a voice

    • Lacey

I completely agree….there is alot we put up with and say this is what it is like to be a woman but it isnt right and there are alot of things that are unacceptable. I was sexually assaulted at 14 and raped at 16….for years i put the blame at my feet, i must have done something. The reality is i didnt deserve it and no one deserves it. I raised my daughter to be fierce, strong, AND loveing because we are capable of all those things.

Kendra, you are very wise. You’re right, someone elses actions are not your fault. Please don’t ever think you deserve to be treated like you don’t matter.

Really enjoyed the vlog and your words. So happy we’re all finding our voices.

Beautiful! It’s emotional because we are compassionate humans at heart. Pain is felt across many even if you’ve never walked in their shoes. We must all respect humanity because in the end we’re all learning to thrive in life, not only survive!

  • Jenni

Your words about how we as women blame ourselves for situations and actions by others so important to discuss. I have struggled with that a lot. You’re right. We need to recognize that thinking that way is wrong and has to be changed. I too have a daughter and it is important to teach her self worth as a human being and that abuse of any kind is never ok or excused. It truly is the time for change. Thank you!

  • Katie

This vlog and you touched my heart<3 You’re an inspiration!

The place of women in this world has changed over my 78 years. When I was young I believed I could be a mother, wife, a teacher or nurse Etc. Nowadays women can be anything they want to be. My daughter is a VP of an oil company, as well as a wonderful mother and wife. I’m extremely proud of her. Your blog was wonderful and heartwarming. Keep up the fight for all. Much love.???

  • Lauren

This video was amazing! You are so strong and I aspire to be a mother like you one day.

  • Jutta

I cry a lot when I saw your viedo. I work with man who still think that a woman are not as worth than a man, it’s very hard. Your Video showed me how importend it is to make a difference, to BE the difference. To be proud, again, and belive in ourself. That is a good feeling. Thank you so much!!!

  • Emily sattora

You are so brave and inspiring gen. You inspire me every day to speak a little louder and hold my head higher. Happy national women’s day to you, beautiful. ❤️

  • Karen

I know what you mean about having a daughter changing your perspective. As my daughter has gotten older, I find myself not wanting to accept certain bad behaviors from others that I have accepted in the past because I don’t want her to see that and think it is normal or ok. I am now fighting harder for my rights and freedoms than I ever have, much to my husband’s dismay. It is our duty to show our daughters strength and courage. I am so hopeful for the future.

  • Snigdha

This was truly, a touching message. And so honest. Women are not ‘things’ or ‘property’. We are just as human as any other being and deserve the same respect as any other being. We are not weak. We have to have our voices be heard. I may just be 16, but seeing the amount the hatred in the world is making me lose faith in humanity. Let’s heal the world. Let’s make it a better place for us, and the coming generation so that they don’t have to face the problems we are facing now. Let’s show love, kindness, respect to each other. ❤

  • Emma

You are a tre inspiration! <3 Women must stand together

  • Alexandra Woodbury

Feeling your emotion in this video made me tear up a little too. And your right, our society is to engrained in these toxic ideas that half the time we don’t even think it’s a problem, we just think that’s the norm. Thanks for fighting with us to change that. Gen, you are such and inspiration to a young women like me, I just hope I can grow up to be half the woman you are. Xoxo

I’m so sorry if someone has mistreated you I want you to know you’re one of the strongest females I know. I love you so so so much. Keep being you.

In this time where we have such a ‘throwaway world’, where there is less and less respect among humans, it heartens me that there are strong, outspoken women such as yourself out there. Unafraid to speak up, willing to teach your children how to be decent human beings and have a view that all are equal. It’s important for them to continue that lesson.

I am grateful to be a woman, a mother, a grandmother, a strong person who has also taught my children (a female and a male) these same values, and have watched my son and his equally wonderful woman teach my grandchildren to value everyone equally.

    Keep up the good work!

  • Nita

Speaking out is power. im proud of you. keep speaking for whats right

  • crystal bowers

I loved this post! It gives me such hope to see a younger woman like yourself experience that beautiful moment of realization when you know you have the power to change the world. Your willingness to lead by example and encourage others to speak their truth and shout it from the rooftops is what this world needs, Thank you for being you! Namaste.

  • Samantha

Hi Gen, first of all I wanted you to know that you and your husband inspired me to save my own life, and i am very thankful. You are a powerful influence who can totally change the world and it gives me faith that maybe I can too. All my life I have been treated as a lesser being, in comparassion to my friends, other men, well…everyone. I thank you for speaking out for all of us because some people who havent experienced womans sufferage dont understand what it is like. thank you and I hope that someday I can be able to thank you in person.

  • Sunny

Your such an inspiration Gen. Thank you so much for your inspirational words in this vlog. I love you and keep being amazing. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

  • SHAKED

Gen, you are a true inspiration to me & to so many others! Hearing you speaking your truth & your past thoughts; watching you as a mother of three, showing the real struggles of being a mother; you are one of my biggest inspirations! Thank you for truely being yourself & for using your platform. I love you so much, keep doing you! You are one of the strongest women I know! xo

  • Maggie

Wow this vlog is beyond amazing. Thank you for speaking up, thank you for being so personal and thank you for sharing. As a teenage girl I’m am so incredibly grateful to have inspiring and courageous women, such as yourself, to look up to. I’m proud to be able to call myself a fan of yours and I’m proud of you for sharing. We are all equal; our gender, race, sexuality… etc. has nothing to do with our equality and I’m so disappointed that there are people out there that try to make it seam like we are not equal for being different than their standards. So thank you for being so brave and speaking out, thank you for fighting for equality, and thank you for helping me be proud to be a woman. You said that there have been times when something bad has happened to you and you blamed yourself, so I just want to say it’s not your fault and I’m so sorry you have been put in terrible situations like that. You are such a strong human being and such a strong woman. Thank you for leading by example and thank you for always being so kind. Happy international women’s day!

  • Carly

    Gen,
Thank you so much for this vlog, both my sister and I have jobs that people would consider that only men can do (I work for the forest service and my sister is an attorney) and for that we get looked down on, not just by men but other women as well. Your vlog has helped me remember why we do our jobs and not just because we love it, but also to prove a point that women can do anything and it’s not up to society to decide for us what we want to do.

Thank you so much and stay strong!

  • Stacie

Thank you for your candid comments, Gen. When someone speaks from the heart with such emotion it touchs other people in ways they aren’t even aware. Keep speaking your truth because people do listen.

  • Stacie

Thank you for your candid comments, Gen. When people open themselves up and talk from the heart, it can be uncomfortable, but it truly inspires others. Keep speaking your truth because people are listening.

  • Anaïs

Words cannot express how grateful I am to you for sharing your experiences and for your honesty, and especially for the inspiration you give me. I cried too while watching this, because your words really resonated, making me reflect on some of my own life experiences. Thank you.

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY! Genevieve, you are a very strong woman and I really want to be strong like you. Thank you for everything. I love you so much!!! God bless you and your family!

  • Robin

I’ve spoken those words and cried those tears. I took the tears and. like you here and so many thoughout the world, turned them into action–small local action, but acation. Thank you for reminding me why I am heading out the door for a meeting of neighbors doing the same.

  • Malena

I too have a daughter and I think everyday about the world she will be exposed to and those who might not treat a beautiful, smart girl with the respect that she deserves. I have participated in the marches here in Washington, DC and I too realize the power of people who come together…we can make a difference, if we all just believe in ourselves and others. Thank you for the emotional message and for using your celebrity to help raise the awareness of women’s issues.

  • Shauna

Gen, thank you so much for sharing ❤️ It’s hard to put your emotions out for the world to see but I’m so glad you did. Please don’t hesitate to put yourself out there. You are a beautiful, proud and strong woman.??

  • Kaitlyn

Your words, in more than just this video, but especially this video, have been so powerful to me. I used to think we as women were equal, until I started to hear stories or just pay more attention. I work in a male dominated field, and on more than one occasion I’ve been told I couldn’t, shouldn’t, or can’t. And it’s wrong. Thank you to you, and to all those who are trying to be the change we need in this world.

  • Amber Quirion

Hello, I just wanted to say that this video touched my heart and is so true with everything that you said. I am a 14 year old girl and I see all guys and people judge women and say that we are not as strong as guys. But it’s not true! I just wanted to thank you for these words. ❤️ Love u Gen!

  • Julie Shelton-Anderson

    Gen,
Thank you for this beautiful vlog. This has touched my heart in so many ways. I got choked up when you mentioned having a daughter gives you all the more reason to fight this fight. That is precisely how I feel. I never thought I could be MORE of a feminist until I had my daughter and then it wasn’t about MY feminism anymore – it was about hers. I’m proud of your voice and thank you for sharing your feelings. The sacred feminine is so strong in you. Keep fighting the good fight with us, love.

  • Rachel

    Thank you for sharing. ❤️❤️❤️

  • Leah

Thank you for sharing.you are truly an inspiration.so many younger people have lost sight of family values and I am proud of you for carrying on and rasing respectful children

  • Adelle Pritchard

Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this. Being apart of these marches and this movement has been an incredible experience for me and you put into words how I feel and why we need to never stop fighting for equality❤️

  • Lisa Britt

I found your words very inspiring and motivating, Gen. I agree with you wholeheartedly that as women, and as human beings we need to rise up and raise our voices so that the many injustices that we have endured are finally eradicated. Marching, speaking out, sticking together, it’s all a part of this incredible movement that we are all a part of. We need to keep it up, keep speaking our truths, and never go back to being silent and hidden. #TimesUp #InternationalWomansDay

  • Tessa

This is so inspiring! Many girls and women face challenges everyday where they believe they have caused a problem or where someone is mistreating them just for being a person of this gender. Listening to you has helped me realize-and I hope may others-that we are all amazing and important. We all need to stand up and make a change to what is going on in our current world. It is estimated that it will take 217 years for women to be considered equal to men and if we all stand-up for one another and for oursleves we can decrease that time limit. #pressforprogress

  • Karen

You are an inspiration to all women and human beings!! You have a truly beautiful soul. You are most definitely raising your children right. ❤?

  • C

    Gen,
When you started talking about how there’s been situations you’ve been in where your first instinct is to blame yourself, I had to pause the video and just sob it out. I have done nothing but blame myself for years, over and over again, every single time I’m placed in horrible situations. And I’m tired of it. And I’m glad you’re tired of it too. You are worth so much as a woman and as a person. You’ve grown as a person and I want to grow as a person too.

    Thank you.

  • Nirali

Gen, your post about women’s day. it’s very inspiring and emotional. I have always felt I’m not good . people criticize me now and then. it makes me feel I’m not enough no matter how hard I try. all of that because i am a girl who can’t speak her opinion. but you and spn family really inspires me and saved me. You teach me how to be better every day. I love you for that. Thanks so much

  • Tania

Aw Gen that was so heart-breaking to watch, yet you shared such an empowering message. I sometimes loose faith on not only others but myself, however people like you often remind that things are unquestionably worth fighting for. Very grateful for that <3

  • Carol Fyall

    Yes Gen!!
I myself have been in a situation where I made allowances and blamed myself for yes looking a certain way! When in reality it was the guy who was in the wrong! Now I have two daughters and I raise them to know they are equal and no matter what that does not change ❤️

  • Tanya

Thank you for sharing your voice <3 Giving pubic voice to our thoughts and feelings can be terrifying and yet so incredibly powerful, especially when we find that so many others think and feel the same way – we're all going to help change the world for the better, one step at a time!

  • Alisha

I just want to say that I enjoy your blog—however, this vlog was very powerful and moving. I don’t know your story—or what you’ve been through exactly, but I’m here to say I understand and I’m sorry for those dark times that you experienced. As someone who has been through countless incidents that fall under #MeToo—from the time I was a child well into my teenage years—I truly understand. I stand with you, as will many others. Doesn’t matter if we’re strangers; that’s the beauty of love, strength, hope, and power that exist amongst women. You are strong, you are beautiful, you are loved, and you are doing an amazing job raising your children; you’re nailing motherhood <3 always remember that—don’t doubt it, ever. Thank you for sharing your voice with us.

    Xoxo-
