My Favorite Ways to Refresh a Space

A home is something that evolves and changes over time. It took us a while to create our home. We bought our house nine years ago, started remodeling it six years ago, and finished the project four years ago. And we are still making changes. The biggest thing I learned is there is no rush. Go slow, see how your style evolves, and figure out what works best for your family.

We recently gave Architectural Digest a tour inside, captured by the brilliant photographer, Michael Mueller. Turning this house into a home has been a true labor of love, so I wanted to share some of the things I learned along the way—with the help of our amazing interior designer Virginia Davidson. Here you’ll find my favorite ways to refresh a space. Check them out below. And I’d love to hear how you refresh your space.refreshSpace1

Add a pop of color

There’s plenty of color all throughout our house, but the playroom really gets the rainbow treatment. Since this is the main hub for the kiddos, it was important to us to have a space that could be kid friendly (i.e. spills-, food- and color-). Initially I was really worried how it would all come together, but I love the mixing of blue, red, and yellow. I’m also really excited about the pendant lighting. These are playful pendants made from recycled plastic from a company called warren & laetitia. Paired with the color palate, it makes such a happy room.

Up your greenery game

I love flowers, plants, and trees and we have a garden where we grow a lot of our vegetables. I find it really therapeutic and adding a plant or tree—even if it’s not the real thing—to a space is a quick way to give it new life.

Create an art gallery

We recently did a whole hallway of our kids’ art, and I love it. And the kids are fans of showing off their favorite new drawings and paintings, too.

Display different books

If you’ve been following me for long, you know I’m a huge reader. I love books of all kinds—novels, cookbooks, coffee table books—I want them all. Whenever I feel like a room needs a little something new, I just switch out the books on display and voila!
