In Conversation with Jacqueline Woodson

Our October N&G Book Club Pick was Red at the Bone by Jacqueline Woodson. I loved this book. As a parent, or even as a daughter, it makes you ache. It also makes you realize how ancestrally we are all linked. Even if we don’t repeat the mistakes of our family members, they still define us.

I was nervous to talk with Jacqueline, but she couldn’t have been lovelier. She is incredibly grounded and family-oriented for someone so critically acclaimed and prolific. She not only took the time to ask about my kids, but she met them on Zoom and sent them personalized gifts.

And I enjoyed hearing about her creative process. She works from home (as do I), and she said when the door is shut, it’s shut. That’s her time for herself and her creativity. I need to remember that!

Watch our full conversation in the video below. And then pick up a copy of Red at the Bone, if you haven’t had the opportunity to read it yet.
